The reactions of propargyldicobalt cations, or Nicholas reactions, are well behaved methods or propargylating many nucleophile classes including electron rich arenes, enol derivatives and allylmetalloids. Nevertheless, some classes of nucleophiles, including alkynes and alkenes, behave poorly or require difficult-to-handle reagents. The use of alkynyltrifluoborate salts (<b>1</b>) and alkenyltrifluoroborate salts (<b>2</b>) have been investigated as potential solutions to Nicholas reaction partners for these problematic nucleophile classes, and their straightforward and unexpected reaction patterns will be discussed.
