Metal organic frameworks (MOF) have a number of applications in gas, hydrocarbon sorption and catalysis. However, this type of material has rarely been utilized for controlled release of fragrance, especially in consumer products. In this work, we not only took advantage of the amphi-sorptive nature of Recyclable Porous Materials (RPM), a special type of MOFs, to encapsulate fragrances, but also utilized these porous materials to slowly collapse and release guest fragrances when exposed to moisture. These studies have shown that SMART RPM-Caps do not undergo desorption in the absence of moisture, and that the release of RPM- encapsulated fragrance compounds by moisture is significantly prolonged when compared to free fragrance alone and in fragrance encapsulated with a modified starch (current market technology). These novel encapsulated materials truly open an avenue for applications in consumer products.
