Cationic gold (I) carbene are commonly proposed intermediates in gold (I) catalyzed reactions, there is, however, a dearth of experimental information about such complexes. Recently, there has been interest in synthesizing cationic gold (I) carbene complexes which resemble reactive intermediates to study the electronic properties of such complexes as well as their stability and reactivity. Current efforts focus on the synthesis and characterization of new gold (I) carbenes that lack heteroatom stabilization that closely mimic reactive intermediates so that they can be used to probe the mechanism of gold (I) catalyzed reaction, with cyclopropanation being of considerable interest.  Herein we report the synthesis of new gold (I) carbenes and their reactivity in conjunction with experimental evidence for gold (I) carbene stabilization and probes to study the mechanism of gold (I) catalyzed cyclopropanation.<br/>
