Cyclic polymers exhibit many unique physical properties resulting from their lack of end groups and ring-like structure. Compared to linear counterparts, cyclic polymers are characterized with a unique set of thermal properties as demonstrated by increased temperature for thermal transitions (e.g. Tg and Tc). The work herein is based on the study of linear and cyclic poly(caprolactone) (PCL) analogs. Improved synthetic techniques were employed, including controlled ring opening polymerizations, quantitative end group transformations, and “click” cyclizations. PCL is the polymer of choice as it provides a platform that is well-studied, biocompatible, and biodegradable. A deeper understanding of the effect of structure will provide an additional tool that can help fine-tune the physical properties of polymers for future biomedical and materials applications. Syntheses of PCL analogs were monitored by MALDI-TOF MS and GPC, and thin film properties were characterized using AFM and optical microscopy.
