Metal nanoparticles modified carbon electrodes have been utilized extensively in the past few decades as electrocatalysts for sensing various compounds of biological and industrial significance. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrazine (N2H4) are such compounds that have to be analyzed at submicromolar range using cost-effective electrodes. Thus a low-cost electrochemical sensor based on silver hexahedrons modified pencil graphite electrode (Ag-Hex/PGE) is demonstrated. The PGE has been modified with Ag-Hex using a simple potentiostatic deposition method from a solution having bio-polymer chitosan as the structure directing agent. The factors that affect the formation of Ag-Hex such as applied potential, concentration of metal precursor (AgNO3), supporting electrolyte (HNO3) and chitosan have been thoroughly analyzed. Further the Ag-Hex/PGEs have been characterized using various spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The sensing performances of Ag-Hex/PGE towards each analyte (H2O2 and N2H4) have been studied using voltammetric and amperometric methods. The limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/m) for H2O2 was estimated as 58.5 nM in the range of 100 nM - 20 mM. On the other hand, 1.8 μM as LOD was obtained for N2H4 in the concentration range of 5 μM - 30 mM. The proposed sensor exhibited satisfactory performance in comparison with other modified electrodes.
