Mg oxide cathodes can theoretically surpass the energy density of current Li-ion technology. A possible explanation for the absence of functional Mg batteries is poor Mg<sup>2+</sup> mobility within oxides, which limits intercalation reactions at the cathode. However the understanding of magnesium cation mobility is lacking. Herein, a combined structural study, utilizing both x-rays and neutrons, of Mg mobility within three spinel oxides will be presented. These results provide insight into features that determine the mobility of Mg<sup>2+</sup> cations in these compounds.
