Lanthanide carbonate hydroxides (Ln(OH)CO3; Ln: lanthanide) are an important class of materials with interesting and useful optical and/or magnetic properties associated with the unique f-electronic structure of the lanthanide elements. On the other hand, nanocrystals with ultrathin structures display properties that are generally quite different from those of the corresponding bulk materials due to the quantum-confinement effect. New and interesting properties and useful applications of Ln(OH)CO3 may be expected if the material can be prepared as nanocrystals of ultrathin structures. We developed a general and straight forward colloidal approach for large-scale preparation of ultrathin nanocrystals of Ln(OH)CO3 (Ln = Eu, Gd, Sm, Dy, Ce). These nanocrystals were then incorporated into poly(silicone-citrate) to produce elastomeric photo-luminescent hybrid materials that are potentially useful for bioimaging applications.
