Gold nanoparticles continue to be of interest to the scientific community due to their size-dependent optical properties, high stability and large surface area, the combination of which allows for a variety of uses ranging from photothermal therapy and drug delivery to catalysis. 2,2,6,6,-tetramethylpiperidinooxy (TEMPO) is a stable organic radical that catalyzes oxidation and polymerization reactions. In the current study TEMPO has been covalently bound to the surface of gold nanorods having an absorption maximum centered about 785 nm to assess the effect of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation on catalytic function. Absorption and surface charge measurements have confirmed attachment of TEMPO to the surface of the rods and NMR used to monitor oxidation of benzyl alcohol as a proof of concept catalytic system.  Preliminary results have been very promising with much higher catalytic turnover observed in conjugated verses free TEMPO. <br/>
