The synthesis of nanoparticle delivery systems for biomedical applications has grown over the last decade. Efforts to manipulate size, biocompatibility, and cargo loading of these materials have demonstrated some synthetic control over these variables. Lung adenocarcinoma cells are of interest for targeted delivery of aerosol-based nanomaterial systems, including electron dense (Au) and tunable fluorescent (CdE, E = S, Se, Te) nanoparticles. For these reasons, a series of core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized to examine the impact of different silica-based architectures with Au and CdTe quantum dots on A549 lung cells. Stöber and mesoporous silica shells were added to metal cores and samples were dispersed in PBS buffer solution. A comparison of the cytotoxicity of the cores and respective core-shell particles were made at 24 and 48-hour intervals. A discussion on nanoparticle syntheses, characterization, and cytotoxicity results will be presented.<br/><br/>
