The goal of this project was to examine the effects on blood glucose reabsorption of adding a biguanide moiety to carbohydrates. Having the ability to lower blood glucose levels is important as millions of people suffer from type II diabetes which causes further complications in the presence of high blood sugar. One way to lower blood glucose levels is to inhibit the α-glucosidase enzyme. Two different synthesis pathways were explored to make compounds that would serve this purpose. Purification methods were also developed along with an α-glucosidase assay method. Potential compounds were characterized using mass spectrophotometry and NMR. This presentation will discuss the synthesis and biological testing results of biguanide-linked carbohydrates.<br/>
