The mechanism and kinetics of transition metal-hydride complex formation through the protonation of reduced transition metal-complexes is relevant to processes such as dinitrogen conversion, catalytic hydrogen production, and carbon dioxide reduction. To that end, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods have been used to investigate the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes involved in the formation of a series of cobalt(III)-hydride complexes. The varied structural features and thermodynamic properties of these complexes provide us with a deeper insight into the factors that influence free energy relationships of PCET reactions involving transition metal-hydride complexes.<br/>
