The macrocyclic ligand 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) (dapsc) was used in the synthesis of novel lanthanide compounds using Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Er, Dy, Ho, and Lu. The magnetic and electronic properties and subsequent 3-D structure were investigated. Synthesis was achieved through heating and/or slow evaporation of lanthanide-ligand solutions. Heated solutions were brought to 52 °C and stirred for 1 h, other solutions were refluxed for 2 h, while some were not treated with heat. All of these solutions were immediately vacuum filtered and stored in beakers for slow evaporation. The solvent for synthesis was varied to include deionized water, ethanol, acetonitrile, or water/ethanol mixtures covering various ratios. Solutions containing ethanol or acetonitrile were covered with a few small holes to control the rate of evaporation, while solutions containing only water were left open. Various lanthanide salts were used including nitrates, chlorides, and acetylacetonates to determine the impact of the counter ion on product formation. Infrared spectra of the ligand dapsc and relevant lanthanide salts were obtained prior to synthesis, and spectra of the products were used to determine a successful synthesis before further analysis. Analysis of the synthesized compounds was done in an effort to magnetically and electronically characterize the lanthanide products. Data was collected using infrared and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and x-ray diffraction. This poster highlights data in an effort to relate electronic and magnetic properties to 3-D structure.
