Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesized with a variety of metal verticies (e.g. Zn2+, Cu2+, Zr4+, etc.) and polytopic linkers (e.g., 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (BTC), 1,4-dipyradine). Our investigation is to study how different metal cation/linker combinations in previously published MOFs are effected by aqueous conditions that are neutral, acidic, or basic. With this method, we can study the same metal/linker combinations in different environments if they are utilized in two different MOFs. After soaking in the aqueous solutions for 1 hour to 28 days, the MOFs are analyzed using fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-Ray diffraction (PXRD), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With this information, new MOFs can be synthesized that have better stability in conditions specific to the desired application.
