Polyphenylethynylarenes, previously prepared in our group show twisting and interruption of <i>π</i>-conjugation due to the hydrogens in the ortho positions of the phenyl rings. To alleviate the steric interactions, we report here the incorporation of diynes into these structures. The extended length of the diyne units versus an ethynyl unit, should get the hydrogens far enough away from each other to avoid twisting of the structure. A variety of two-dimensional macrocyclic polyphenylbuta-1,3-diynylarenes can be prepared from a common intermediate, 3-(buta-1,3-diynyl)phenol. The polyphenylbuta-1,3-diynylarenes are highly conjugated and may be useful in the preparation of photoreactive materials.
