Polyoxometalate ions (POMs) are predominately-anionic metal-oxide clusters usually composed of Group IV or V transition metals and oxygen. As POMs have an ever-expanding wide range of applications, it is imperative to be able to relate the solid-state structure of POMs to their reactivity in solution. To do so, we have begun studies on the small Anderson-type POM, which consists of a central octahedral atom surrounded by six transition metals linked via oxygen atoms. Herein, we present the synthesis, structure, aqueous solution reaction dynamics and oxygen-exchange kinetics of the IMo6O245- ion through potentiometric titrations and 17O-NMR.
