The current U.S. Food and Drug Administration assessment process for determining photosensitive side effects of pharmaceutical drugs is not always efficient or effective. The purpose of this project is to propose a more efficient and cost-effective method for predicting photosensitive side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. The molar absorptivity, the change in dipole moment upon excitation, and the quantum yield of ibuprofen were determined using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This was done in order to explore new photophysical parameters that could possibly be used to predict photosensitive side effects in new pharmaceutical drugs.
