Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is an active learning pedagogy that promotes the development of process skills and content knowledge through guided team-based activities.  The process skills – oral and written communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, management, information processing, and assessment – align well with 21<sup>st</sup> century skills, namely those that make students marketable to employers and effective in the workforce.  In a traditional grading scheme, content knowledge is readily assessed through the completion of homework assignments and exams.  However, process skills are harder to evaluate authentically.  Standards, or specifications, -based grading provides the opportunity for authentic assessment of process skills by providing students with the desired outcomes and allowing them multiple attempts to satisfy the outcomes.  This presentation discusses the initial work in using a standards-based grading scheme in the general chemistry classroom at a small, liberal arts college.  Examples of learning standards and learning goals will be presented, with an emphasis on addressing the assessment of POGIL process skills.<br/>
