<br/>Our work aims to develop a new family of transparent conducting oxides by engineering transparency in metals. This differs from the current approach of doping wide band gap insulators, which is physically limited by the solubility of dopants. Furthermore, the mobility is severely affected by the resulting ionized impurity scattering. Our route instead searches for metals whose electronic structure have weaker optical transitions, and are therefore transparent. We focus our efforts on Group V transition metal oxides, which are prepared by sol-gel and traditional solid-state chemistry techniques. We measure the optical and electronic properties and evaluate their effectiveness as transparent conductors. These properties are intimately related to their perovskite-like structure. Finally, we demonstrate the ease of chemical modification for these materials. It is a goal of our integrated computational design / experimental platform to identify metallic oxide materials with limited optical transitions which will be helpful in the development of optoelectronics and photonics.<br/>
