Reactions between conventional disinfectants, natural organic matter (NOM), bromide and iodide in water produce disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Disinfection byproducts are associated with a variety of human health effects including cancer. Drinking water supplies may also contain emerging contaminants such as nanoparticles (NPs) which can produce strong catalytic activity. Little is known about the impact of nanoparticles on disinfection byproduct formation, particularly in the presence of light, but we hypothesize that chlorinated nanoparticles-treated samples will have higher levels of trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) disinfection byproducts than control samples. In this study, synthetic drinking water samples containing NOM, bromide and iodide, and either TiO2 nanoparticles or ZnO nanoparticles at pH 7.9 were exposed to natural sunlight for 2 h and disinfected in the dark for 48 hours with 0.03 mM of Cl2. Presentation will discuss toxicity results of DBPs obtained under these conditions.
