The marine bacterium Vibrio Harveyi has been used as a model for studying the molecular mechanisms of quorum sensing through which microorganisms detect their population density. The siderophores produced by V. harveyi have also been identified making this organism an ideal model to study the interactions between quorum sensing and siderophore production. We report on the production of specific siderophores (as well as their breakdown products) by V. harveyi under various conditions of quorum sensing and Fe-limitation. The results provide an explanation for the previously reported observation that siderophore production is paradoxically down-regulated at high cell density.
