Bacterial resistance to current antibiotics is a growing public health threat. Millions of people every year in the United States become infected with bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and thousands die as a result. Natural products have played key roles over the past century in advancing the understanding of biology and in the development of medicine. Many of today’s small molecule therapeutics trace their origins to natural products, which have attracted considerable synthetic interest due to their broad spectrum of biological activity.<br/><br/>Antimicrobial natural product peptides have emerged as promising candidates for developing new antibiotics due to recent technological advances which have enabled the isolation and growth of uncultured bacteria. Peptides have received increased attention as they are thought to have advantages of small molecules and protein drugs. Thus, the central hypothesis of this research focuses on the biological activity of antibacterial peptide analogues via synthesis of peptide fragments in order to elucidate the structure components necessary for the pharmacophore.
