Fossil fuels are mixtures of hydrocarbons, that upon their combustion, are converted into carbon dioxide and hydrogen into water, these sources can be supplemented by gas extracted from shale formations whose quality is dependent on thermal maturity (vitrinite reflectance), sorbed-gas fraction, reservoir thickness, total organic car bon content, and volume of gas in place. These and  other factors are reviewed with respect to economic growth.
