Guar gum-poly (vinyl acetate) graft copolymers was used for sizing yarn in the search for potential sustainable and environmentally friendly warp-sizing agents as substitutes for poly vinyl alcohol. Guar gum was used as raw material to prepare guar gum with low molecular weight by β-mannanase. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated graft polymerization in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and acetylacetone (Acac) has been successfully applied to the synthesis of guar gum-poly (vinyl acetate). The graft copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR), and Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (PY-GC/MS). FT-IR, NMR and PY-GC/MS confirmed that vinyl acetate (VA) was grafted onto guar gum successfully. The effects of pH, VA content, HRP dosage, incubation temperature and time on grafting percentage (GP) and grafting efficiency (GE) were also investigated. The GP and GE under optimal conditions reached 27.39% and 34.21%, respectively. This research supports the idea that guar gum-poly (vinyl acetate) graft copolymers could have potential as an environmentally friendly warp-sizing agent.
