Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a specific form of the flipped classroom in which students prepare material prior to class and work on activities of increasing complexity as a team during class time. Teams engage with the material to make a specific choice about a complex question. Each team’s answer is revealed to the class then teams debate the relative merits of the responses. During the debates, teams must defend their positions with supporting evidence. In this way, students engage deeply with the material during both the intra-team and inter-team discussions. This methodology requires developing questions that initiate conversations uncovering nuances and complexities within a topic. In quantitative disciplines, such as chemistry, it can be challenging to develop appropriate activities as there is often a single numerical answer to typical problems. To address this difficulty questions were developed that use a calculation as part of the decision making process, rather than a choice about the process of calculation itself. This presentation will present an overview of the TBL methodology and how it can apply to the chemistry classroom, including specific examples from an upper-level course.
