Development of methods to new high-nuclearity, metal-oxo clusters continues to be an active area of study due to the relevance of such compounds to various fields of chemistry, physics, and materials science. Some of these clusters have also attracted great interest because of their structural similarities either to biological units such as the oxygen evolving complex of photosynthesis, or bulk materials such as metal oxides. In our group, the use of manganese with its various stable paramagnetic oxidation states (II-IV), in metal-oxo-carboxylate chemistry has led to numerous clusters with fascinating structural features and intriguing physical properties, such as single-molecule magnetism. In recent work, we have been developing a new family of heterometallic clusters involving a Mn/O cage-like unit with a lanthanide or main group metal inside. We recently reported initial results in Bi/Mn/O chemistry, and have more recently been studying Pb/Mn/O analogues. This presentation will describe the preparation and crystal structures of some Pb/Mn/O/RCO<sub>2</sub><sup>-</sup> clusters, and the results of their magnetochemical characterization.
