Porous material with high porosity and diverse functionality have shown great potential in the application of gas separation and storage. However, the solid nature of these materials limits their further processing and integration into conventional flow processes. Type 3 of porous slurry refer to the porous framework materials that are dispersed in the fluid media where the fluid molecules are excluded from the pore networks. Therefore, the porous slurry can be pumped to realize continuous sorption and desorption operations between an absorption tower and a desorption tower. In this work, ZIF-8, a new subclass of porous material, is dispersed in water/glycol to form the porous slurry. By using the ZIF-8/water-glycol slurry, a tail gas mixture containing hydrogen/propylene was separated by the absorption-adsorption method. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the separation effect using only the solid ZIF-8 material, ZIF-8/water slurry, ZIF-8/glycol slurry, and ZIF-8/water-glycol slurry. The experimental results show that the slurry made of ZIF-8/water-glycol(20%) achieves good gas separation. The influences of temperature, mass fraction of ZIF-8 in ZIF-8/water-glycol (20%) slurry, pressure, and gas-slurry ratio on the separation performance were evaluated, respectively. we found lower temperature, the mass fraction of ZIF-8 of 20wt%, and higher operating pressure are suitable for recovering hydrogen from H2/C3H6 mixture. Its C3H6 adsorption ratio reaches 95% at 335 kPa inlet pressure and the H2 recovery ratio is more than 80%. Low temperature and a relatively high pressure are beneficial to the separation of hydrogen from its tail gas component of propene efficiently. All the slurry was totally reusable at least for up to three times. The structure of ZIF-8 material was not altered meaning the material could be reused for more than three times on an industrial scale.
