Proazaphosphatranes have emerged as highly effective ligands for a variety of palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Although palladium complexes supported by these ligands have been invoked as catalytic intermediates, such compounds have not been reported to date. A series of palladium(0) and palladium(II) complexes has been prepared and the structures of these putative catalytic intermediates has been elucidated crystallographically. Catalytic and stoichiometric reactivity studies have demonstrated the viability of these compounds as intermediate in C-N bond formation. Furthermore, the unique transannular interaction found in proazaphosphatranes is studied as a function of reactive ligand identity and metal oxidation state, providing direct evidence for this bonding phenomenon in stabilizing reactive intermediates.
