Living systems have evolved the capacity to carry out many chemical transformations of interest to synthetic chemistry if they could be redesigned for targeted purposes. Our group has identified a pathway for the production of amino acids bearing a biorthogonal tag. Different pathway variants have been designed to produce these amino acids in heterologous hosts with the long-term goal of site-selective incorporation into different protein targets for downstream modification.
