The synthesis of polycyclic (hetero)aromatics which are significant structural motifs in many applications have been developed using amino substrates through visible-light photocatalysis. Amino substrates with tBuONO allow in situ generation of diazonium salt as the intermediate and undergo intermolecular cyclization ([4+2] benzannulation) with alkynes to generate polycyclic (hetero)aromatics or intramolecular cyclization to form carbazole derivatives under the visible-light irradiation. Moreover, benzo[c]cinnoline derivatives could be selectively formed under the modified reaction conditions without visible-light irradiation.
