Synthetic nickel oxides have been found to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS), accelerating the oxidation of organic compounds in water. Nickel oxide-activated PDS effectively degraded phenolic compounds and several pharmaceuticals. The degradation rate of 4-chlorophenol by nanoparticulate nickel oxide was more than 100-folds higher than that by microparticulate nickel oxide. Notably, the PDS utilization efficiency, expressed by the ratio of degraded organic compound to decomposed PDS, was close to 100% at certain experimental conditions. The synthetic nickel oxides were also found to exhibit magnetic properties that can facilitate the separation of those materials from the treated water. Both radical and nonradical mechanisms are believed to act on the PDS activation by nickel oxides, and it appears that size and sintering temperature of synthetic nickel oxides affect the activation mechanism of PDS. Different approached including electrochemical analyses and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to elucidate the mechanisms through which organic compounds are oxidized on nickel oxides in the presence of PDS.
