TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) facilitate the diffusion of dioxygen to the active sites and exhibit a higher durability compared to TiO2 nanoparticles film during the photocatalytic degradation of gaseous pollutants. Herein, we synthesized {001} facet-exposed TiO2 nanotubes (001 facet TNT) and tested their photocatalytic degradation activity and durability of gaseous toluene. While the surface of bare TNT composed of {101} facet anatase TiO2 nanocrystals, the crystallographic structure of TNT's outer surface was alligned with {001} facet anatase TiO2 which was confirmed by TEM and XRD analysis. The photocatalytic degradation activity of gaseous tolune on 001 facet TNT was 2 times higher than that of bare TNT. In cooperation with Samsung Electronics, the 001 facet TNT filter (273 x 308 mm2) was fabricated. The 001 facet TNT filter equipped air cleaner (AX7000, Samsung) showed 72.1% of total harmful gas removal efficiency under air cleaner standards (SPS-KACA002-132, South Korea) and would get CA mark certified by Korea Air Cleaning Association.
