Particulate air filtration technology remains the most widespread and effective mean of treating airborne particulate pollutants in air. High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can remove 99.97 % of 0.3 μm particles from air. However, molecular pollutants such as malodors and volatile organic compounds can penetrate through HEPA filters. This study develops a new air purification technology based on ionic liquid coating to simultaneously remove multi-pollutants. The ionic liquids, which were verified as safe ingredients for A549 lung epithelial and Madin-Darby canine kidney cells, were immobilized on HEPA filters by surface modification & spray coating method. Compared to pristine air filters, ionic liquid-coated air filters exhibit improved filtration efficiencies for airborne particulate matter as well as molecular pollutants without increased air flow resistance.
