Methamphetamine (METH) and ketamine (KET) as a common illicit drugs in China were ubiquitous in aqueous system and may pose threat on aquatic organisms. However, the fate and stability of them as a crucial parameter for toxicity in aquatic environment is still unclear. Biodegradation may be a major way to clean up the METH and KET contaminant in streams, but the knowledge on the effective decomposition of them by bacteria and the shift of bacterial community were unknown so far. So the present study investigated the biodegradation potential of METH and KET in simulation microcosm bioreactors. After 40-days incubation, the removal rate of METH and KET were 22% and 21.5% in aerobic-light group, 50% and 35% in anaerobic-light group and 27% and 18% in anaerobic-dark group, respectively. The half-life of them were calculated using pseudo-first-order kinetics model, which manifested these two drugs were refractory in aquatic environment.<br/>Moreover, Neither METH nor KET were demonstrated no absorption to sediments and no photolysis in this work. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analysis indicated that the candidature families for effective biodegradation included Methylophilaceae, Saprospiraceae, WCHB1−69, Desulfobulbaceae, Porphyromonadaceae, FamilyXI, Peptococcaceae and Rhizobiaceae. The predominant families, observed in KET and METH degradation process but scarcely detected in the wild, would have an impact on other microorganisms flourish. Meanwhile, METH as an environmental factor may affect bacterial structure in field water samples using canonical correlation analysis (CCA), which alarmed that the presence of METH and KET in surface water may impair the ecosystem equilibrium.
