The uncontrollable non-planar electrodeposition of lithium is a seemingly insurmountable barrier to the widespread adoption of rechargeable batteries with a lithium metal anode. Solid electrolytes with high modulus offer a route toward planar electrodeposition. We present a study on the effect of current density on lithium electrodeposition in lithium symmetric cells comprising a polystyrene-<i>b</i>-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer electrolyte. Total charge passed through the cell before short-circuit failure decreased with increasing current density.  Using X-ray microtomography, we determine the current density for the onset of dendritic growth in the symmetric cells.  This value is compared to predictions of prevailing theories.
