Properties of biomolecular and polymeric film materials are dependent on the structure of single molecules as well as their assemblies. Supra- and macromolecular assemblies often exhibit orientational ordering during growth. Thereby understanding and controlling such structural organization is of fundamental importance for applications in biomacromolecular research and supramolecular polymer science. In this contribution recent progress and perspectives in IR spectroscopic nanopolarimetric analysis (30 nm resolution) using an extended version of a photothermal IR nanoscopy (AFM-IR) technique are presented (Fig. 1). In particular, several highly sensitive polarization dependent nanoscale studies of anisotropic thin film materials, such as polymer, protein and polaritonic films as well as supramolecular aggregates are discussed. The polarization dependent IR nanoscopic spectra enable label-free analysis of anisotropic ordering and structure of macromolecules. [1-4]
