The release of dioxin-like chlorinated aromatic compounds has attracted much attention because of their hazardous effects on the environment and human health. Because of their bioaccumulation and high toxicity on living individuals, polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been classified as controlled persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Stockholm Convention. Although the production and usage of PCNs and PCBs have been banned since the mid-1970s, unintentional emissions of PCNs and PCBs from industrial thermal processes such as the coking industry, secondary nonferrous metallurgical facilities, and municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs), are increasingly expected to become their important source. Therefore, the stringent emission control of PCNs and PCBs is the matter of public concern. In this study, three crystalline forms of Al2O3 (α-, η-, and γ-Al2O3 ) featuring rod-like fibers , and magnetic ternary iron-based composite oxide nanosphere, were prepared using a simple and cost-effective hydrothermal process. The catalytic degradation of 1-chloronaphthalene (CN-1) and 2-monochlorobiphenly (2-MoCB, CB-1) as the model compound over these materials was investigated on a pulsed-flow microreactor with a fixed bed quartz-tube reactor. The degradation products were identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and ion chromatography (IC). Based on these determined products, the related degradation mechanism was explored in combination of the as-prepared metal oxide nature. The reductive hydrodechlorination and oxygen-attacking pathways act competitively.
