Cellulose nanofibers from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs) were successfully isolated by chemical and mechanical treatments. Cellulose nanofibers isolated by sulfuric acid hydrolysis had 2-3 nm in diameter and 1-2 mm in length. Meanwhile cellulose nanofibers isolated by combination of ultrafine grinding and ultrasonication had 27.23 ± 8.21 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length. X-ray analysis showed that the crystallinity and degradation thermal of cellulose nanofibers obtained from mechanical treatment was higher than that of chemical treatment. The obtained cellulose nanofibers were successfully used as reinforcement agent in nanocomposite production for packaging and medical applications, such as thermoplastic starch-PVA films, antimicrobial sachet and medical suture.<br/>
