DuPont Industrial Biosciences is developing a platform technology using enzymatic polymerization of sucrose for the design of engineered new polysaccharide or oligosaccharide materials. Depending on the sugar transferase of choice, such materials can be designed in regard to their linkages, molecular weight, solubility, and architecture. Currently, the development of these materials for various industrial applications is underway. Also, the polysaccharide backbones can be further functionalized through chemical or enzymatic routes to further enhance properties required for the end-product performance.<br/>In this presentation, an overview of the development status of this platform technology will be described.  Some selected examples on the enzymes in use and some potential application examples for these engineered polysaccharide materials will be discussed. The advantage and potential of this emerging enzymatic polymerization technology will be emphasized as a new sustainable material platform technology approaching commercial introduction.
