A general procedure for the synthesis of substituted pyridones has been developed. Upon generation of a dienoyl isocyanate, a 6π-electrocyclization can occur under relatively mild conditions to afford pyridone products. In the case of aromatic ring fused pyridones, Lewis acids were found to significantly enhance the reactivity and accelerate the cyclization.
