Optimizing the catalytic performance of Pt is a grand challenge for the economic utilization of Pt-based heterogeneous catalysts. Using CeOx nano-architectures generated on anatase (A)-TiO2 powders as an anchoring site, we designed a highly reactive CeOx-TiO2 (CT) hybrid-oxide supported Pt catalyst for CO oxidation. CeOx clusters uniformly distributed on A-TiO2 effectively anchored and stabilized Pt single atoms or clusters. The Pt catalysts anchored at the CT interface showed 4.7 times higher mass activity for CO oxidation at 150°C than a conventional Pt/TiO2 catalyst, only with 0.25 wt.% of low Pt-loading. The modified chemical nature of the Pt-CT three-phase interface and the physical stabilizing effect of the CT interface are cooperatively attributed to the improved performance of Pt catalysts for CO oxidation. Through a combinatorial study of density functional theory calculations and experimental catalyst synthesis and analysis, we provide clear insight into the formation of the Pt-CT three-phase interface and its promoting effect for CO oxidation by atomically distributed Pt catalysts. Our findings demonstrate how the optimum catalytic performance of Pt catalysts can be achieved smartly by utilizing a metal-support interface.
