Mg is earth abundant and low-cost (ca. 24 times cheaper than Li), and as an anode material, Mg is safe to use without dendrite formation (vs. Li, Li-ion, or Na-ion batteries). Its high gravimetric capacity (2,333 Ah/kg) and high reduction potential (-2.37 V <i>vs </i>SHE) allow the assembly of high-energy density batteries. Sulfur with its low cost and high capacity (1,671 Ah/kg) is a promising cathode material to match the high capacity of Mg anode. Based on our recent work on advanced Mg electrolytes called MMAC, we have been able to demonstrate high energy density Mg/S batteries. In this presentation, we will share our results on applying nano-structured additives in improving the cycling performance of sulfur cathode in Mg/S batteries.
