Mechanistic organic chemistry can be utilized to generate signal amplification in sensing routines. We have recently exploited auto-inductive cascades to measure the biproducts of hydrolysis of nerve agents.  In the first part of the presentation, the concepts and approaches will be delineated to detect fluoride and thiols, the products from V- and G- agents. Further, a field-deployable device for photographic imaging will be presented, that plays the role of a portable 96-well plate reader.<br/>The senses of taste and smell operate via a series of cross-reactive protein-based receptors that are non-selective, but create patterns that discriminate solution and vapor composition, respectively. The second topic of the presentation will cover the field of differential sensing that is inspired by these mammalian senses. It will be show that a union of designed receptors targeted to a class of analytes, with combinatorial methods, gives fingerprints that differentiate between the individual members of the class. The technique represents a marriage of supramolecular chemistry and chemometrics. Applications in the analysis of lipids, kinases, and wine will be discussed.<br/> <br/>
