The Frontiera lab uses nanoscale and ultrafast Raman spectroscopies to investigate how local environments affect chemical reaction dynamics. We develop and apply spectroscopic techniques to answer questions in areas including plasmonic photocatalysts, photovoltaics, and membrane protein biophysics.  Our plasmonics research focuses on understanding the energy partitioning in coupled molecular-plasmonic systems as a function of time, relevant for understanding the mechanism of action of plasmonic catalysts, as well as guiding the rational design of highly selective photocatalysts. Our photovoltaics research seeks to determine how vibrational coherences can drive charge transfer and longer-range charge transport processes in organic crystals, through the use of femtosecond stimulated Raman microscopy. And finally, we are developing a label-free super-resolution Raman imaging technique to monitor living cells on the nanometer length scale. Together, these projects demonstrate how nanoscale environments can be used to drive unique chemical reactions, and highlight the use of new spectroscopic techniques which probe chemistry on nanometer length scales and femtosecond time scales.<br/>
