Composition Spread Alloy Films have been used for study of the properties of AgxPd1-x and CuxAuyPd1-x-y alloys used in hydrogen purification membranes and as hydrogenation catalysts. AgxPd1-x and CuxAuyPd1-x-y CSAFs form can span all of alloy composition space. Spatially resolved surface analysis methods have been used to study the surface science, surface chemistry and catalytic properties of these binary and ternary alloys across the entire ternary alloy composition space, x = 0 → 1 and y = 0 → 1-x. The bulk and surface characteristics of these alloys have been mapped across composition space using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), UV photoemission spectroscopy (UPS), low energy ion scattering (LEIS). Their catalytic activity and surface reaction kinetics for hdyroegnation reactions have been measured at 100 different alloy compositions using a novel 100-channel catalytic microreactor array. The entire ternary alloy space has been mapped to identify the phases of the alloys, surface segregation, valence band electronic structure, and activity for H2 dissociation, ethylen hydrogenation anda acetylene hydrogenation. The set of measurements yields an understanding of the influence of composition on alloy properties and correlations between these properties and catalytic reaction kinetics.
