Over the last two decades, photoredox catalysis with noble metal-based complexes has emerged as an extremely valuable synthetic tool and is increasingly implemented as a more efficient alternative to established thermal processes. Very little has been reported on the catalytic applications or the photoreactivity of systems incorporating non-noble metal photosensitizers.<br/><br/>We will present the synthesis and characterization of the Ni(II)- and formal Ni(I)-complexes, bearing a redox-active macrocyclic ligand (Mabiq). They have been characterized using a wide range of experimental and computational methods, including single crystal X-Ray diffraction, NMR, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy as well as DFT and TD-DFT calculations. These complexes were applied in photocatalytic cyclisation reactions and their photophysical properties were evaluated.
