Application of single-molecule and single-particle fluorescence imaging to answering mechanistic questions in organic and organometallic systems will be described in two main focus areas: motions during polymerization catalyzed by organometallic catalysts and the role of additives in the direct insertion of organohaildes in to metal powders to make reagents for synthesis (i.e., “the Knochel protocol”). Determination that lithium chloride assists in the solubilization of previously unknown organozinc intermediates along the pathway towards reagent synthesis will be discussed. These investigations harness specially designed imaging agents to uncover the behavior of previously unobserved processes.
