Although Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) offer spectacular design and performance opportunities in displays and lighting, the current materials used in their manufacture are costly and can suffer from short lifetimes.  A key component is the dopant, the species that emits light upon electrical excitation, and to this direction highly efficient dopants have been developed based on phosphorescent iridium complexes. The identification of alternative dopants that maintain high efficiency but lower cost and improve lifetime has been an area of intensive research. Dopants that emit light by the mechanism of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) offer the high efficiency afforded by phosphorescent dopants but without the need for precious metals. This talk will focus on the synthesis, photochemical characterization and device testing of novel TADF dopants based on copper and boron compounds. A combination of computational analysis and molecular design enables precise control over the emission color. Further, minimization of the singlet-triplet energy gap of the dopant was found to be essential for improving device efficiency and lifetime.
