We report rotational distributions for the O2 (a 1Δg) fragment from the photodissociation of jet-cooled O3 at 248, 266, and 282 nm. The rotational distributions show an intensity alternation which favors the even states. The alternation, however, is much stronger than previously reported by Valentini and co-workers (J. Chem. Phys. 86, 6745 (1987)) for a 300 K sample. Our results show a suppression factor of 0.87 for v=0 at 266 nm while the suppression factor for the 300 K sample is 0.43 for v=0 at 266 nm. The alternation is less pronounced on the low and high J side of the rotational distributions in agreement with previous studies but we do not observe a strong dependence on either O2 (a 1Δg) vibrational state or photolysis wavelength. The population alternation for the jet-cooled ozone is still very strong for the rotational distributions at 266 and 282 nm and for O2 (a 1Δg, v=1). We observe a clear dependence on parent internal energy. We have investigated the effects of parent internal energy on the intensity alternation to help elucidate the origin of the alternation. The recent results are discussed in the context of a previously proposed theory for the intensity alternation.
