Redox flow batteries (RFBs) has recently been recognized as a viable technology for scalable energy storage due to the fact that its power density is decoupled from energy density. However, even the most advanced RFBs suffer from a number of drawbacks, i.e. expensive and resource-limited materials, temperature-limited low solubility of active species, low current performance, and moderate energy densities. One of the avenues, which can improve their efficiency and reduce the cost of the RFBs, is to use multi-electron based electrolytes, capable of operating within multiple charge states and/or of storing/releasing multiple electrons. In this poster, we will present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of various redox-active Fe complexes featuring non-innocent ligands with a wide range of charge states. We will illustrate the ways of improving efficiency of RFBs through ligand modifications and demonstrate principles to maximize the potential-to-mass ratios of these complexes, thus paving the way towards a new-generation electrolytes for RFBs with high energy densities.
