Low cost nanoscale iron oxides afford a variety of applications in sustainable chemical processes due to their electronic, magnetic, catalytic and recoverability properties. Currently, nanocomposites of Fe3O4 and carbon-based materials are intensively studied for sustainable energy storage applications. Graphene encapsulated Fe3O4 nanoparticles are investigated as superior anode materials for lithium ion batteries, while Fe3O4 nanoparticles and derivative, spinel metal ferrite nanoparticles (MFe2O4, M = d-block transition metal ion) deposited on nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes are being studied as superior high energy density supercapacitor electrodes. As the electronic and magnetic properties of nanoparticles are very sensitive to the size, shape, crystallographic structure and internal spin magnetic order, there is a need for detailed characterization of their physical properties in order to tailor the synthetic routes that maximize their performance. In this talk the electronic and micromagnetic characterization of iron oxide and ferrite nanoparticles via magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy will be explored. Examples will be presented on a series of spinel ferrite MFe2O4 (with M(II) = Fe2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Ni2+) nanoparticles with photocatalytic properties.
